Advertising and Marketing Career Descriptions

There is $100 billion-plus spent each year in advertising. Most national advertising and much of local advertising is prepared by advertising agencies. A modern advertising agency is composed of writers, artist, buyers of space and time, researchers and other specialist. The advertising business in general grows in proportion to the national economy. Growth will be accelerated through the development of new products and services. Promoting products through advertising and sales promotion devices is evolving as technology opens new avenues to reach consumers.

Annual salary range is from $23,000 - $97,000.

Advertising jobs are expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations though the year 2006.

The opportunities available in the adverting field include all mediums including radio, newspaper, web, and television.

Job Descriptions

Advertising Clerk
Processes and files advertising forms, and related information. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent and 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision; typically reports to a manager.


Art Director (Advertising)
Responsible for development of product branding. Visually communicates the product or service in a manner that will appeal to the target audience under time and space constraints. May require a bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. May lead and direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department.


Art Manager
Plans, directs, and coordinates all activities in the art department. Works with marketing department to design TV commercials, catalogs, brochures, etc. May require bachelor's degree and at least 7 years of experience in the field. Artist
Develops, sketches, and/or prints creative ideas for a variety of mediums. No formal training required, although may require 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Audio Visual Technician
Sets up and adjusts audio-visual equipment. An associate's degree or its equivalent is required, as well as 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision; typically reports to a supervisor or manager. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is expected.


Desktop Publishing Operator
Completes assignments involving word processing, including page layouts, charts and computer graphics utilizing desktop publishing equipment and integrated software packages. May require an associate's degree in a related area and 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Little creativity is required. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.


Desktop Publishing Operator, Sr
